If you are having trouble growing grass in your lawn space, or if you just want a quick, and effective, way to have your grass look healthy, then sod installation is a great option for you. Sod comes in two, main forms: it can come in individual square pieces, or it can come in rolls. Basically, sod is pre-planet grass, that is designed to be picked up, and the transplanted to a different location. Once set down, seeded and watered, the sod will root in to your soil, and grow just like “normal” grass would.
The first step in making sure that sod can be set down correctly is to clear out your entire yard of all debris. In this step, we will go through your yard and pick up any large pieces of debris, such as branches or trash. We will then come through and make sure that other things, such as leaves, or smaller plant debris, is raked up and disposed of. We are trying to make a blank canvas here, so that nothing interferes with the next step in the process.
After you yard has been cleared of all debris, the next step should be to rototill it. Rototilling is not a mandatory step in the process, but it does a fantastic job of prepping the soil for the acceptance of the sod. We always choose to rototill if the option is left up to us. During this step, we will bring through a machine that will use a mechanized till to dig in, and turn over, the top layer of your soil. This brings healthy solid to the surface and disturbs the earth enough that any new root systems being form, from the sod, will have a much easier time doing so.
Once your land has been cleared of debris, and the soil has been tilled for you, the next step is to do the actual lying down of the sod. Depending on which version of sod you’ve ordered, we will either bring the sod pieces in pallets, or rolls. If the sod is in squares, we will lie them out in a way that makes sure they are firmly butted up against each other, and that all land space is filled. If we are using sod rolls, we unroll them in long enough lengths that cover all empty land.
After the land has been cleared of debris, the soil has been tilled and the sod has been put in to place, the next step is to make sure that the sod is properly watered. Because sod is alive when we move it, it is very important that it gets watered, shortly after being installed. Proper watering will help the root systems of the sod to grow down, in to the soil; locking the pieces in place. After this, watering needs to be done regularly in order to keep all of the sod healthy.
